"Unusual depositions of the Bandkeramik culture – the pit enclosure at Herxheim. Presentation of selected complexes with human skeletal remains, pottery and other groups of artefacts
Already remarkable for its style of construction, the double pit-ring surrounding a Bandkeramik settlement near Herxheim (Southern Winestreet District, Rhineland- Palatinate), contained numerous extraordinary depositions of human bones, skulls and skull vaults as well as stone artefacts and animal bones, bone tools and various jewelry artefacts. A random sample of eight of these complexes is presented in this article, which precisely analyzes the different material groups and interprets their interaction with reference to the chain of events and the rules of the deposition. The extraordinary ritual that forms the basis of these depositions has only been observed in this complexity at Herxheim, up to now. Through the complexes introduced in this article, it becomes comprehensible for the first time."
